Life Beyond Beginning Wicca
You've read every beginners book available. You've taken Wicca 101 or Beginning Wicca classes. You know all of the holidays, tools, and basics about Wicca. What's left? If you're a solitary practioner like me you probably find yourself asking this question. I spent many years knowing all about Wicca, but not knowing how to get to the next level. I spent several years being a beginner without knowing how to get beyond the novice level.
I was no better at being a Witch than I was being a Christian. As a Christian I only went to church at Christmas or on Easter Sunday. I only prayed when I needed something. As a Wiccan I only practiced on Sabats and only performed magick when I desparately needed something. I could claim I was either a Witch or a Christian, but I didn't truly walk either path. I read about magick, but didn't live magick.
When you get to a point where you aren't finding anything new in all the books and classes you take, it's time to make a choice. Are you ready to start practicing magick or continue observing it? In order to be a true practioner you must make magic part of your every day life, not just something you do 8 days out of the year.
During your begining studies you were given a quick over view about all types of magick. Now is the time to focus on the aspects that really speak to you. Pick some things you want to specialize in. For me, I found that I was deeply interested in herb magick, which is hilarious for me since I've killed every plant I've ever owned. Growing, harvesting, and drying my own herbs has added unexpected happiness to my life. This is not to say that I only use herb magick. I use all types of magick, but using herbs for teas, infusions, incense, or in sachets is my everyday magic. When I have a situation that is not an everyday situation, I still pull out the big magickal guns. You've been given the foundation to use candle magick, gemstones, herbs, and all the others during your initial training and just because you pick candle magic to specialize in doesn't mean that you can't use other things as needed. Nor does it mean that are pigeon holed into only that type of magickal practice. At some point in the future I may choose to learn another magick more indepth, but as for now herb magick is my choosen course of study.
The same holds true for divination tools, alter tools and rituals. You have come to the point in your path where you need to claim your power. During my novice phase, (which lasted about 10 years) I bought every tool and divination method out there, but there are specific items that speak to me. I am witch who specializes in herb magick, scrying, and the magickal uses of my Athame, which was my first magickal tool.
Also, the holidays are sacred days. You should make the most out of each holiday with some kind of planned event. You don't have to have an elaborate ritual, but you should be planning your activities in advance. If you can't have a feast and ritual, plan a nature walk, leave an offering to the Goddess in the woods. Whatever you do, make it your own. Don't copy something from a book. You all know about the Sabats. If you don't then you are not ready yet. You need to study some more. Taylor the Sabat activities to your personality. Last Samhain, I cooked a large feast, celebrated with my kids by trick or treating, and then had a small ritual afterwards. On Ostra I had a tea party with my best friend and we took a nature walk with our kids. Not every Sabat needs to be an elaborate ordeal, but if you are up for an elaborate setting then by all means do it.
Moving to the next level is about making the magick yours. Claim it and live it. You will never stop studying or learning about magick, but it's time to start applying your knowledge. It's time to start walking the path, not just stand in the middle of it waiting for something to happen. Live the Magic!
There are many good books that discuss magick in more detail than just the basics.
One of my favorites is To Stir a Magick Cauldron by Silver Ravenwolf. It is a great companion to those who started with To Ride a Silver Broomstick. Another one of my favorites is Dancing the goddess incarnate: living the magic of maiden, mother & crone by Dorothy Morrison.
Discussion:
How can you start living the magick? What things do you want to specialize in? What things have stood out during your basic training of Wicca?
